Into the Roots

A dance performance where, Fanny Kivimäki, expresses her feelings of homesickness as well as ours. Some of us left home of our own free will, while others were forced into exile. Into the Roots portrays the nostalgia which we, for better or worse, associate with everything that comes from our roots. Collaborating with a video artist, a composer and a light designer, Fanny Kivimäki, with her strong stage presence and poignant expressions of longing, describes life with its dreams and regrets. Homesickness is portrayed here with music, dreamlike videos and expressive dance that all combine to create a colourful experience, where much is left to your own fantasy and interpretation.

Motivation of the jury:

Homesickness and nostalgia stand in contrast with robust on-stage physical presence when Fanny Kivimäki presents a solo dance performance about the roots of life. The interpretation fluctuates between melancholy music, fantastic videography and expressive dance. The scenography and props speak volumes about a longing for hills and open country. An excitement develops between the filmed element and the living, that revolves around the actions of falling, rolling and climbing. Fanny Kivimäki performs with huge energy and meticulous detail. In times when people uproot and move across the globe, it is increasingly important to discuss questions of longing and belonging.
