Duda - AMTIJ

In a society where you are expected to follow the norm and the will of your father, Duda strives to stand by himself and to fight for his rights. Duda takes the risk of being exposed not only to his fathers rage, but also the exclusion of the community. In a humble, yet effective way, this performance from Mozambique shows that living conditions are alike all over the world.

Associação Moçambicana de Teatro para Infância e Jovens (AMTIJ) gathers around 20 theatre practitioners from different groups from Maputo - actors and theatre directors, drama lecturers and students from Universidade Eduardo Mondlane with some consistent work and interest in theatre for children and youth. In the project ”From idea to action” a joint project with ASSITEJ Sweden, ASSITEJ Zambia, ZATCYP (Zimababwe), and ASSITEJ South Africa, AMTIJ created a performance called Duda. Duda is the story about the boy Duda who fights his family and who learns to rise above his father´s disapproval about his effeminacy. In the end his dreams set him free.
