Helsingborg Concert Hall was inaugurated on November 12, 1932. That same year, Helsingborg celebrated a triumph with its new concert hall designed by architect Sven Markelius — already referred to at the time as "Sweden's first functionalist monumental building."
The new ideas that formed the foundation of functionalism had begun to take shape a few years earlier. It was a radical architectural movement that gained ground through the world exhibition in Paris in 1925. The Swiss architect Le Corbusier became a major source of inspiration for Sven Markelius, as did the Bauhaus school in Germany. The latter was built on the idea of uniting art, craft, architecture, and industrial thinking.
The new architectural ideal was spelled out in function, air, and quality of life, and became the guiding star for Markelius as well. Previously, questions such as acoustics had not been a major concern, but Sven Markelius thought differently. He wanted the musical experience to be at the center and enlisted the help of French acoustics expert Gustave Lyon. The result was outstanding.
